Breast Cancer Facts
- Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women.
- In 2008, approximately 182,460 women and 1,990 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- This year, 40,480 women and 450 men will die from breast cancer in the United States.
- During our lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- The two most significant risk factors for developing breast cancer are simply being a woman and getting older.
- Young women can and do get breast cancer. This year in the U.S., about 10,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of these, about 1,000 will be between the ages of 20 and 30.
- When breast cancer is found early (within the breast), your chance for survival is the greatest.
- Komen recommends the following:
- Do BSE (Breast Self Exam) each month starting by the age of 20. To learn how to do BSEs, visit www.komen.org/bse.
- Have a clinical breast exam by your doctor or nurse at least every 3 years starting at the age of 20 and every year after the age of 40.
- Have a mammogram every year starting at the age of 40.
- If you are under 40 and have breast cancer in your family or are worried about your breast, talk to your doctor.
